Moz (OSE)

Currently, the Moz index holds 1.3 trillion links. By comparison, the Ahrefs index is more than 10 times larger at 12 trillion.

Nevertheless, Moz’s metrics, namely Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA), have become the industry standard among SEO professionals. In fact, DA is so widely used that it is considered almost an official metric.

Note: Nobody has compared metrics of different systems in working mode, so what to use depends on your personal preferences.

Unlike Ahrefs and Majestic, Moz (OSE) does not have an Overview/Summary tab, it just shows external and backlinks.

Here is a list of the main functionality of the system:

  • Domain Authority (DA), Page Authority (PA) and Spam Score ;
  • How many total external backlinks and links. ;

However, even with a free account, OSE provides access to more data than most other, free programs.

The service displays metrics (e.g. DA / PA / Spam Score) for the top five, backlinks (twenty for Moz community members). It will also show the page for all backlinks in the index.

Moz provides free access to the domain report and near-text anchors.

It should be said that the full report output is not available for free accounts, you will have to register to get it.

There is a bit of confusion about the output. The site says you can export up to 10,000 links with 25 links per domain.

However, in figuring out OSE, we found that, the export is limited to one thousand lines. This could be a simple error or inaccuracy.

I already wrote about how click tracking is very important in web analytics in the first part of this article Tracking Clicks on Site Elements with Google Tag Manager: An Advanced Guide (If you haven’t read it yet, be sure to do so). But even more important is tracking clicks on links. After all, a user clicking on a link can go from your site to another, and you lose your visitor. Or by clicking on a phone number or email can contact you. The second of course is much nicer)

Such action, of course, should not be allowed to flow. They need to be tracked and analyzed. If you have already read the previous article, you know that tracking clicks on links can be done with two types of triggers: All Clicks and Just Links. We learned about the first one above, so let’s look at the second one in detail today.

Just Links Trigger in Google Tag Manager

There are only three settings to set up:

  • Wait for Tags. This setting allows you to set an extra time for the activation of the tags associated with the click. In this case, the link will be delayed for the time specified in the appropriate field or on the activation of the required tags.
  • Check Validation. Allows you to activate tags only when the link is successfully clicked. If not checked tags will be triggered at any click on the link. Note: if your code on the site uses event.preventDefault() command, you need to uncheck this option or the listener will not be triggered.
  • The Enable this trigger when all of these conditions are true only appears when the Wait for Tags option is activated. It allows you to activate the trigger only when certain conditions are met. It should not be confused with This trigger fires on (Trigger activation conditions). If you want the trigger to be triggered on all pages, use the regular expression .*.

In practice, you will often omit the Expect tags and Error-checking settings if they are not necessary. The basic conditions are set in the Trigger Activation Conditions section.

Now that you have the basic parameters of the Just Links Trigger, let’s take a look at some examples.

Tracking clicks on outbound links with Google Tag Manager

One of the main goals in marketing is not to lose your customers and visitors. But creating a functional and useful site that doesn’t have a single outgoing link is almost impossible. But to track which links users follow most often – it’s quite realistic. Setting is very simple. The only thing you need to know is that information about clicked links is stored in the Click URL variable. All outgoing links are links that do not contain your domain name.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated about working with the link trigger and transmitting click events data. For the most part, the algorithm is as follows:

  • Determine which link is clicked and which you want to track;

How links are tracked

To track transitions, the tracking service wraps the original link with its own links, thus changing it. When the recipient clicks on the link, they are redirected to a site that acts as an internet gateway, and only then to where your link led. For the recipient such a substitution remains unnoticeable, because it does not affect the speed, and the page address changes to the one you provided in a matter of seconds. This fast redirection is enough for the system to trace the link.

Types of links in emails

There are two types of links in emails:

  • direct link,
  • Anchor link.

You can track jumps in both cases. But direct links are still best avoided. And here’s why.

Imagine if you received an email with a link, but clicking on it takes you to a site asking for a donation. How do you know if link clicks are being monitored?

Hover your cursor over a link in the email and look in the lower left corner of your browser. If the link that appears there is identical to the one in the email, journeys through it will not be monitored. If it’s not the same link, the clicks will be tracked.

How does Linkbox monitor links?

There are 2 main modules implemented in Linkbox to track backlinks: the campaign module and the crawler monitoring module. How to track links with the first one is described in detail on the page Check Links. Here we will look at the second.

1) Google Search Console. Monitoring backlinks in the console is very important because it displays only those that are accurately counted for the ranking of your site. You need to import data into this folder on a regular basis. To do this, just get an unload from the GSC:
2) Ahrefs. This section is designed to import data from a popular service. It is useful to monitor backlinks from this source in order to understand what your links are known to your competitors, as most experts use it for analysis. To import your data from Ahrefs just go to the “Backlinks” tab, select all and click on export in utf-16 format:
